Microsoft Windows Server 2008
Windows Server 2008 has been a long awaited and deeply enhanced upgrade that surpasses its predecessors in almost every feature.
The following are some essential changes, which makes this new windows server robust.
More Component Based
Microsoft has built a completely enhanced Windows Server architect that is more component based.
These major changes have made it a more manageable and secure system, which is most beneficial to the customer. Component dependency is kept to a minimum.
Improved Server Manager
Server Manager has been reconstructed to be a centrally based location for daily management needs, and is the only administration tool needed for regular administration and maintenance. Previous operating systems featured a Server Management with individual management consoles.
The MMC-based Server Manager provides is a user interface for managing Application Server, activity Directory Domain Services, DNS Server, File Services, Terminal Services, Web Server, and much more. Included are troubleshooting tools like Event Viewer, Services and Applications, and Reliability and Performance Utilities, WMI Control, Device Manager, Task Scheduler, Windows Firewall and Windows Server Backup.
Windows Server 2008 BitLocker
BitLocker is a full-drive encryption solution for branch offices. Data is totally inaccessible if compromised at any branch office location and works hand-in-hand with RODC.
Read-Only Domain Controller of Server 2008
A read-only domain controller (RODC) is a domain controller that houses read-only partitions of the Activity Directory Domain Services (ADDS) database.
This is needed when a domain controller is deployed at a location where physical security is not always present. With RODC, Users can now experience faster logon times, improved security and efficient access to resources on the network.
Internet Information Services 7 (IIS 7)
The new Web server in Windows Server 2008’s management console has notably improved. It also supports xcopy Web application deployment and delegated administration.
It’s also supported by new .NET-based configuration store, which replaces the previous monolithic configuration store. IIS7 is also driven by an important new update to Information Services (IIS).
IIS 7 is also component based for easy configuration.
Easy to Configure Windows Firewall
For the first time, Windows Server ships with a firewall that is enabled by default. The new Windows Firewall is bidirectional and works seamlessly with all of the roles and features you can configure in Windows Server 2008.
In fact, the Firewall is part of the new roles-based management model: As you enable and disable various roles and features, Windows Firewall is automatically configured in the background so that only the required ports are opened.
This is a major change, and one that could hamper compatibility with third party products, so testing will be crucial.
Terminal Services
There are a few beneficial changes to Terminal Services (TS). Individual applications can be installed remotely to a PC without having to install an application to all PC’s within an environment. The application will seem as if it is located installed, aside from the initial logon dialog box. The Remote Desktop client is needed.
Users can access their applications remotely without configuring a VPN client. The advantage is VPN connections are usually blocked by wireless access points. The TS Easy Print allows for printing to local printers from remote sessions easily, users can copy and paste between the OS host and remote sessions; and TS supports 32-bit color. .
Network Access Protection
Network Access Protection (NAP) allows for setup and configuration of network security policies. NAP verifies the security policies on each machine as it connects to the network. Those machines which do not having matching security policies (usually remote machines) are quarantined until they are uploaded with new updates.
Updates depend on how the environment has been configured.
Hyper-V
Hyper-V is a hypervisor-based virtualization platform. It is installed and maintained as a role under Windows 2008 similar to DHCP and file and print services, allowing for easy servicing, configuration and management.
There are so many rich features that come with Windows Server 2008 that they cannot all be mentioned here. You will have to figure out for yourself how best it will meet your company’s needs.. One thing is for sure, Windows Server 2008 should meet the needs of any company that is looking for a server upgrade, large or small.
